Drawing

Overview

Very low magnification

  1. Outline of major structures and locations.
  2. Major differences in staining intensity and colour.

Higher magnifications

  1. Outline major differences in staining intensity and colour.
  2. Outline open spaces and white areas.
  3. Nuclei.
  4. Cell borders.
  5. Fibers.

Labels

  1. Slide number and name: Slide 42 - Colon.
  2. Plane of sectioning: Cross, longitudinal or diagonal section.
  3. Indicate level of magnification: very low, low, medium, high or very high magnification.
  4. Anatomical structures: skin.
  5. Histological structures: epidermis, dermis, hypodermis.
  6. Histological tissues: connective tissue, muscle, fat.
  7. Functional units: secretory unit.
  8. Cellular structures: cytoplasma, cilia, nucleus, nucleolus.
  9. Extracellular structures: fibers.
  10. Staining characteristics: acidophilic, basophilic, eosin, hematoxylin, dark, light.

Use

  1. Solid lines: definite borders - example the nucleus.
  2. Broken lines: structures - example the endocrine islets in the pancreas.
  3. Broken lines: imaginary lines bordering structures - example cell borders.
  4. Shading: areas with no discrete borders but indicated by differences in staining intensity and colour - example mixed secretory units.
