Clinical case

While performing a routine physical examination of a 53-year-old woman, a physician notices that the dorsal surface of her tongue is smooth, glazed, and tender to the touch. Closer examination reveals a complete absence of papillae. What are the different types of papillae found on the dorsal surface of the tongue, and what is their structure? Do you know of any deficiency or diseases that may be responsible for their absence? What is the structure of a taste bud?
