Appendix vermiformis Slide 43

Clinical Case
A 12-year old boy starts complaining about a pain around the navel, which moves to the lower right side of the abdomen, becoming sharp and localized. At his soccer practice the previous day it hurt when he, breathed deeply and when he walked. He was also nauseous.

He was diagnosed with appendicitis.

  • What structures are very characteristic of the appendix?
  • How do these structures appear histologically and which layers are affected?
  • How does the appendix differ histologically from the ileum?
Microscopy

This preparation of the appendix is also used to demonstrate a parasympathetic ganglion of the myenteric plexus that is present between the muscle layers of the gastrointestinal tract. This is a very high magnification.
