Slide 55: Thyroid gland

H/E

This slide is a section through the thyroid gland.

Identify microscopically:

  1. Follicles (acini)
  2. Colloid

  3. Clear cells

  4. (Fibrous septa and collagenous capsule

Draw and annotate:

A number of follicles of the thyroid gland in detail.

Reflection:
  1. What are the structures that form the follicles?
  2. Where are the clear cells found, and what do they look like?
  3. How is the fibrous tissue organized?

Elaboration

Macroscopic anatomy of the thyroid gland

  1. Discuss the position, relations, structure and blood supply of the thyroid gland.
  2. Briefly discuss the embryological development of the thyroid gland and the clinical relevance thereof.
  3. Name the structures affected by enlargement of the thyroid and list the effects thereof.
  4. List the relationship of the thyroid to the following clinically important structures - trachea, carotid arteries, recurrent laryngeal nerve, external laryngeal nerve, thyroidal arteries and parathyroids.
  5. Identify the thyroid on CT scans or MRl
