Slide 78: Ureter

H/E

This specimen is a cross section through the ureter.

The ureter serves as an example of transitional epithelium (urothelium).

Identify:

Macroscopic

  • The circular ureter

  • The lumen

Microscopic

  • Lumen

  • Mucosa

  • M. externa

  • Adventitia

  • The different layers of the epithelium

  • The shape of the cells in the different layers

Draw and annotate:

A line diagram of the different layers of the ureter.

A few epithelial cells to show the different cell shapes.

Reflection:
  1. How many layers can be identified?
  2. How does the shape of the cells in each layer change? What is characteristic of the luminal layer? Why?
  3. What is typical of the lumen?
  4. What type of epithelium lines the ureter?
  5. How many layers of muscle are found along the length of the ureter?
  6. How are these muscular layers arranged?
