Specialised Connective Tissue
The purpose of this topic is to study the different blood cells and to do a differential white blood cell count. To do a differential white blood cell count, a blood smear is made and stained. For the practical, a slide has been prepared to use as a virtual slide.
Objectives
- Identify, differentiate, describe and classify the various components of blood.
- Describe the primary functions of blood, its fluid and cellular components, and its physical characteristics.
- Describe the formation of the components of blood.
- Identify the components visible on a Wright’s stained blood smear, using morphology and staining properties.
- Count and calculate the approximate proportions of leucocytes on a blood smear.
- Describe the life-cycle of the various components of blood.
- Describe and discuss the functions of each of the components.
